2018 Volvo XC60 Polestar

2018 Volvo XC60 Polestar: The Harmonious Blend of Swedish Elegance & Performance

The 2018 Volvo XC60 marked the introduction of the second-generation model built on Volvo’s flexible SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform. While the standard XC60 was acclaimed for its minimalist Scandinavian design and top-tier safety standards, the Polestar Optimization took this luxury mid-size SUV to a higher level of dynamic performance without compromising comfort or efficiency.

1. Key Performance Highlights & Engine Variants

Polestar (Volvo's official performance arm at the time) offered factory-backed software and hardware tuning across the XC60 line, with the T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid serving as the flagship.

  • Polestar Optimised XC60 T8 Twin Engine:
    • Engine: 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine (Turbocharged & Supercharged) + Rear Electric Motor.
    • Total Power: Boosted up to 421 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque.
    • 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph): Approx. 5.2 seconds.
    • Transmission: 8-speed automatic with recalibrated gearshifts for faster gear holds during high-G cornering.

    • Other Optimized Powertrains (T6, T5, D5, D4):
      • T6 Gas AWD: Boosted to ~334 hp.
      • D5 Diesel AWD: Enhanced mid-range torque for superior overtaking capability.

What Polestar Changed: The optimization wasn't just about peak power. Polestar re-engineered throttle response, gearshift speed, gear hold in corners, and off-throttle engine behavior to give the SUV an athletic, connected feel.

      2. Exterior Design & Scandinavian Aesthetics

      • Thor’s Hammer LED Lights: Features Volvo's iconic LED headlights integrated into a wider front grille.
      • Polestar Signage: Subtle Polestar badging on the front grille and tailgate.

      • Wheels & Stance: Dynamic stance with available 20- or 21-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels paired with lower-profile tires.
      • Dual Exhaust Outlets: Integrated chrome exhaust tips giving the rear a muscular look.

      3. Interior Comfort & Technology

      • Minimalist Cabin: Crafted with premium Nappa leather, real drift-wood or mesh aluminum trims, and fine stitching.
      • Sensus Infotainment System: Portrait-oriented 9-inch touchscreen supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
      • Bowers & Wilkins Audio: Optional 15-speaker high-fidelity sound system with Gothenburg Concert Hall acoustics simulation.
      • Digital Cockpit: 12.3-inch fully customizable digital driver display.

      4. Safety & Driver Assistance (Volvo Core)

As expected from Volvo, safety remains standard-setting:

      • City Safety with Steering Support: Automatically assists with steering to avoid collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, or large animals.
      • Pilot Assist: Adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance operating up to 130 km/h (80 mph).
      • Oncoming Lane Mitigation: Prevents head-on collisions by steering back into the lane.
      • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Steer Assist: Prevents lane changes if a vehicle is detected in the blind spot.
